I'm inasmuch as converting my 1999 TJ Wrangler from gas-guzzling petrol to diesel, hopefully with one of the 2.5d Cherokee engines.

Has anyone done this conversion before? Was it difficult? Are there any other engines of a like size that will 'drop in' relatively easily?

I'm not looking to convert it to a mega-sized diesel, I'm after better gas mileage. (Here in the UK gas is over $10 a gallon!)

I mentation they had stock Wrangler diesels in the UK? but to answer your Q? why not the fun of owning a Jeep is to customize them. If no one else has a Wrangler with the 2.5d then do it! (oIIIIIIIo)

You are looking at a LOT of experiment and work. If you are in the UK, you will probably have it easier to find a donor vehicle with a Diesel engine (lucky you!). If you do it yourself, you are looking at at least 2 weeks of down-date. wrangler crd clean diesel
